Overview of game: Minecraft is a sandbox construction game, a type of digital Lego world. However, it is much more than that. Unlike the traditional role-play video games, the game provides the player(s) the freedom of doing what they want. There are no rules, and the adventure/mission is up to the player(s). It is an open-ended game for users to explore, gather resources for crafting and building, and combat. The player(s) sets his/her own challenge or mission. There are several playing modes to choose from: survival mode, adventure mode, spectator mode and multiplayer mode.

Minecraft Education Edition provides downloadable worlds that can be used for different type of subjects such as language and arts, science, history and culture, computer science, math and, art and design. The downloadable content suits students from 3-18 of age. The instructor sets missions (tasks) for students to accomplish. The ultimate goal is for the players to complete the objective(s) through collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. The instructor is able to create a NPC (non player character) to act as a guide or provide information to students when needed. At the same time instructors can customize the sandbox by placing ‘blocks’ preventing players going into areas that they are no allowed to. Additionally, it has a feature of tracking students’ progress by allowing them to take pictures of their work to document the progress on their assignments. The open environment encourages students to think creatively, engage in problem solving while gaming.
